PRAGUE CONFERENCE

The conference Back into Nut’s Womb: Burial Containers of the Old Kingdom, Before and After was held in Prague at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University, from 19th to 20th May 2025. The aim was to bring together specialists in wooden coffins, stone sarcophagi, plant fibre (reed) containers, and ceramic/pottery coffins from the Early Dynastic Period through to the Middle and New Kingdoms. The goal was to discuss issues primarily related to the production, decoration, and typology of burial containers, as well as their socio-economic and religious significance. While the main focus was on the Old Kingdom and First Intermediate Period, the conference also sought to place these objects in a broader historical context to trace continuities or identify potential innovations in both earlier and later periods.
