The conference Back into Nut’s womb: burial containers of the Old Kingdom, before and after will be held in Prague at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University, from 19th to 20th May 2025. The intention is to gather specialists in wooden coffins, stone sarcophagi, plant fibres (“reed”) and ceramic/pottery coffins from the Early Dynastic Period to Middle, respectively, New Kingdom in order to discuss the issues primarily related to the production of burial containers, their decoration and typology, as well as the social-economic and religious embedding of these intriguing objects, not only for the Old Kingdom and First Intermediate Period, but by setting them in a broader context also to trace the continuity or possible innovations, both in the previous and subsequent periods.
