Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien
Marie Peterková Hlouchová and Věra Nováková spent the end of May 2023 in the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien studying wooden coffins and their fragments and stone sarcophagi and pottery coffins in the collection. The examined wooden coffins and stone sarcophagi from Giza were found during the excavations of Herman Junker at the beginning of the 20th century. They provide interesting information regarding not only their decoration (wooden coffins), but also technical details (wooden coffins and stone sarcophagi) as well as insights into social structures and burial customs of the period under survey. In addition, they investigated also several pottery coffins from Tura dated to Predynastic Period to gain invaluable comparative material to Old Kingdom corpus of finds.

Their research focused on the construction details and decorative techniques of pieces dated to the Old Kingdom and First Intermediate period. Finds from Memphite region, namely Giza, Abu Rawash (stone sarcophagi) and Meydum (wooden coffin fragments), but also representatives of local traditions from provincial site such as Assiut (wooden coffins) or Deir el-Bahri (stone sarcophagi fragments) were examined.
